Tudor Road roof extension

Roof extension, Hackney E8
The existing 2 storey building served as the administrative element for a very large manufacturing plant that lay behind. The commercial use for this property had long since ceased and we were commissioned to prepare a scheme for a vertical 2 storey residential extension for four 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.

The existing concrete stair was extended and ceiling heights remained high so that the apartments would benefit from the large south facing windows. The two top floor flats are set back from the front facade to give large South facing terraces and to reduce the mass of the new extension from the street.

Initially we looked into pre-fabricating the structure using solid timber panels, but the client eventually settled on a more traditional steel and timber hybrid which suited both the budget and the building programme.

Materials used included Cedar, Zinc, perforated aluminium, and reinforced concrete which compliment the rugged character of the existing building and its immediate surrounding context.
